Detailed description

The Ministry of Public Education (MNP) was the central government agency of the Russian Empire responsible for national educational and scientific institutions. It existed from 1802 to 1817 and from 1824 to 1917. From 1817 to 1824, it was part of the Ministry of Intellectual Affairs and Public Education in the form of a department. The Department of Public Education was in charge of personnel, inspection, accounting, economic and judicial affairs of educational institutions. The Academic Committee reviewed curricula, evaluated the contents of books, drew up the charters of societies, reported on those who received special instructions from the Department of Public Education and had special departments to review books recommended for general reading.
