Detailed description
The Catherine School is one of the oldest charitable institutions for girls of the Women's Patriotic Society, founded in 1820 under the name Foundry Needlework School. From 1847 to 1893, she was under the patronage of Grand Duchess Ekaterina Mikhailovna, the vice-president of the society. The six-year curriculum included basic elementary school subjects (later gymnasium subjects) and a general needlework course. The imperial family provided financial support to the school, which commissioned sewing work for its students. The works of the students were also sold at charity bazaars. The girls from the family were parishioners and orphans who were kept at school.
