The Benois building of the Russian Museum began to be built in 1914. During the First World War, the construction of the building was suspended. The construction was finally completed in 1919. Initially, the Benois Building was called the Palace of Arts. It was intended for temporary exhibitions of paintings by great painters. The current name of the building was given in honor of the artist and architect Leonty Benois. He was also involved in the design of the building. S.O. Ovsyannikov assisted in the creation of the corps. After the Great Patriotic War, the building was reconstructed. A junction between the building and the Mikhailovsky Palace was created. The historic building was designed in the neoclassical style. The building's accent is given by the facade with an Ionic order colonnade. The building is rectangular in plan, with rusticated corners.
