Pathoanatomical pavilion of the Clinical Institute led by Elena Pavlovna
Detailed description
Architect Richard Alfred Gedikev created the eclectic Clinical Institute building, which was built between 1878 and 1885. The idea of creating this institute belongs to famous professors of medicine of the 19th century, such as N. I. Pirogov, N. F. Zdekauer and E.E. Eichwald, professor of the Medical and Surgical Academy. In 1871, after medical scientists proposed the creation of a specialized institute for the training of doctors, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna allocated a plot of land on Preobrazhensky Square for the construction of a Clinical Institute. Elena Pavlovna's daughter, Grand Duchess Ekaterina Mikhailovna, took part in the creation of the institute. Opened in 1878, the Clinical Institute attracted students from all over Russia. Until 1917, more than ten thousand doctors studied at the institute. After the revolution, the institute was renamed the State Institute for Advanced Medical Training. In 1993, the institute received the status of an academy and has since been called the Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.
